Undefeated Cleavers win 2009 Championship

The Leave it to Cleavers were undefeated this season.  We claimed our second consecutive title as Salt City Derby Girls’ league champions on September 29, 2009 at the Salt Palace by defeating the Sisters of No Mercy 125 – 68.

Tensions were high as all the Cleavers felt the pressure of defending our title. What a difference a year makes! This championship bout was very different from the previous year when the Cleavers were the underdog and in a stunning victory denied the Bomber Babes their chance for back to back titles.

We knew that the Sisters of No Mercy were a formidable opponent so we had a game plan in mind going into the bout and we were able to stick to it. We kept out of penalty trouble and made some half-time adjustments to better control the pack. Our outstanding jammers were in rare form that night and were able to rack up points. Staying out of the penalty box meant our blockers were on the track to help our jammers and hinder the Sister's jammers from scoring.

Being the captain of the Cleavers this year has brought me a tremendous amount of joy. The Cleavers are a unique group of women who have a ton of respect for one another both on the track and off. While we have some truly outstanding skaters, our strength comes from our ability to work magnificently as a cohesive whole.

I am inspired by them and find comfort in knowing that for years to come, this fine group of women will have my back.
